Being an Entrepreneur in South Africa is hard at the best of times. Being a Mompreneur in South Africa is like having a super power, I swear. The amount of juggling that goes into being a Mom and running a Business / Organisation makes an Air Traffic Controller’s day job seem simple.
The truth is that with a bit of support and know-how, you can very easily juggle away. During my years as an Entrepreneur I have met and worked with some of South Africa’s best Mompreneurs and have always asked them the same question: “How do you do it?”
Their answers have been stored in my memory bank and today, I’m sharing them with you:
1. Include your kid (s) in your Business
I follow this advice daily (almost). Admittedly, when stress levels are high and deadlines need to be met, I have to remind myself that I have the blessing of being able to raise young people and need to include them in my daily tasks. Also, when you are on a phone call and need some silence, it really does help to ask your little one to write down their own notes based on what they hear you say 😉 Including your kid (s) in your Business / Organisation will not only provide them with an education that NO SCHOOL in the world can offer, but you can turn it into fun quality time too.
2. Switch your phone off and read a bedtime story
I’m pretty sure that like me, you check emails at night? Don’t.
Rather, switch your phone off and read your kid (s) a bedtime story. Not only does it make you a better Parent, but “Leaders are Readers”! Including a daily read into your routine will help settle your busy mind and who doesn’t love an adventure story??
3. Shower at the beginning of every day
Haha I can just imagine you reading that saying ” but Sam, I do shower I promise!”.
But, let’s talk openly for a minute.
If you are a work-from-home Mompreneur I’ll bet that you have had those days when you may have woken late, rushed to school in a tracksuit and then, upon return immediately jumped into the day’s work. Or, you had worked late the night before, hubby takes the kids to school the next morning and as soon as you opened your eyes, you opened your emails. You see, I know you 🙂
Do yourself a favour and get up at the same time every day and shower. Dress as if you are going to a Corporate Office and treat your home desk as if a Co-Worker will walk past it at any minute. It works, trust me.
4. Stop feeling guilty when you attend a school function during the day
This is a feeling I know all too well! Attending any form of a function relating to personal responsibilities during the day i.e normal working hours for most, makes me feel like I am somehow cheating my Business.
If you feel the same, keep reminding yourself that while the rest of the world works 8-5, we as Mompreneur’s work 24/7. We have two jobs running at the same time and should never feel guilty for taking an hour out of our day to watch our kiddies sports matches. That is, after all, one of the main reasons why we wanted to work for ourselves in the first place, wasn’t it?
5. Look after your health.
Seriously now, why is it that when our kid (s) show the slightest sniffle we embark on a pharmaceutical crusade, yet when we as Mompreneurs fall ill it takes a hospital visit before we admit our illness?
Being a successful Mompreneur means that you need to be able to take a step back every now and then and put yourself first. Learn to sleep well. Stop drinking copious amounts of coffee during the day without eating. Treat your health as your number one client because if you are sick, your Business is sick too.
Tell me, do you have any tips on how to manage the title of Mompreneur?
